Has someone tried a ignition coil out of a car (benzine, not diesel)? No idea 
if this is suitable for a AC voltage and longer running times (maybe thermal 
problems) but someone could try it.

Hello Riese, LFers,

Aahh....the good old neon sign transformer, or NST as we Tesla coilers refer to 
them.  It brings back a lot of
fond memories including a visit with Mike Tucknot of Swindon, U.K.   Another 
very robust transformer that
might work for your experiments would be one from a microwave oven.  I think 
I'll do some testing of one
with a signal generator, amplifier and ground electrodes just to satisfy my 
curiosity.
