The preferred modes for commercial operators is still CW and MSK on the
LF/MF bands. Radio amateurs are trying to re-invent the Wheel only to end up
with CW and MSK.
Taking everything into consideration from generating electric to run the
transmitters to the end traffic throughput. they are the most efficient
because they use efficient class C, D and E amplifiers at 90% efficiency.
Using modulators as add on gadgets to accommodate data modes is not an
efficient approach.
Data modes are fun modes they come in all sorts of varieties and disappear
just as quickly. Who wants a mode that uses an amplifier at only 38%
efficiency if you are lucky.
