Agreed - in the direction of the wire: in my case W-E is the best direction.

By the way, last night I was on 630m WSPR RX with the earth-electrode "antenna" with a preamp in circuit and the shack PC on batteries. Best results yet with 23 unique stations spotted. I am sure a good Marconi will better it, but it does a very decent job.

No, an earth antenna radiates in the direction of the wire, approximately east-west...

I agree.

Best would be a stony mountain sourrounded by a small lake rivulet. For
example like here:

Ah and BTW it would be good to have a good Restaurant near that
location, just to spend a few hours there while transmitting.
