Yes I agree.  I have several of that "type" of device, which has the U-Blox or Neo (the naming is confusing)  chipset  that is used on many manufacturer's products.  
It does have a 1 PPS output .  

I would steer clear of any that have the antenna on te module though - simply because it is easier to build the GPS module into any piece of equipment and run in a single coax antenna lead than it is to mount the whole assembly in view of the sky and have to run a muilticore cable.

No PPS so not much use for this application.  You
would definitely need a 1PPS output.
Still, there is a pps pin, see attachment.
The power consumption is a significant factor BTW.
