Welcome, Wolf, I agree about the superiority of three-phase AC. Our Power lecturers went into some detail as to why this was so. My comments originally related to the use of three-phase supplies in domestic installations. Regarding the UK situation, my source of information was a colleague who had previously worked for the Central Electricity Generating Board. The French information came by word-of-mouth from somebody who worked for the electricity maintenance organisation (ERDF). I do not know who was responsible for the decisions to phase out domestic three-phase but I am reminded of an episode in Fred Hoyle’s novel “The Black Cloud” in which the Astronomer Royal tells the Prime Minister “It’s not my fault the transmitter isn’t working. You shouldn’t have let the Home Secretary [aka Interior Minister] do the wiring”.
