An other way to look at local noise received on the probe is that local noise is traveling over the shield of the coax to the antenna and is picked up by it.

When you ground the shield of the coax e.g. when it enters the house or at the bottom of the mast the local noise flows to earth and does not reach the antenna. I just checked it at 475.1 kHz and it makes a difference of 8 dB, when the shield of the coax is grounded either just before entering the house or at the bottom of the mast.
This is a big difference, enabling weak signal work or not!

The same applies for apartment dwellers with a balcony mounted antenna.
