Ok Stefan ,
Cpu loading , I think its a try and see situation, differing
motherboards / cpu's etc seem to have differing loading , I changed
to a new m-board for my old P4 3.8 and the cpu load dropped by 25%
.....
then how does the program know on which frequency I choose on the TX?
Good question :) you can use any of the modes on any of the bands ,
as long as the rx is set the same .... all are the same on/off
keying , time is used to set the s/n level , I think the 30 second
version is optimised for hf>vhf , but will work on the lower bands
First option ) If you use the CAT option then the band and qrg is
pre-loaded , this mainly applies to the VHF/ HF bands
Second ) Use the nominated frequency and use audio drive SSB tx/rx ,
then the system is auto configured , ie , I set my exciter to 500.00
usb and the Rx to 500.00 usb and use audio drive.
Third) If you need to select your TX frequency and use com-port
ptt drive , then the normal operation is to use a carrier off set ,
based on the USB dial set frequency , this enables remote monitoring
stations to be on frequency and intercept below the noise signals .
Depending on OP8 or OP32 , the carrier needs to be off set to ensure
the correct audio frequency range at the Rx
But , yes as in Pete's test to day , monitoring stations can simply
re-tune to accommodate fixed Tx tests. this also happens when Joe
vo1na uses OP on 507.77 ( fixed allocation)
Distance OP8 , well I think that may be held by Gary g4wgt and Joe
vo1na at 3500 Kmts , on 136 Khz Gary using 400 watts to a 12 mtr
top loaded vertical , later Gary also decoding Joe.
Quite regular decodes from ra3agc into the uk have been reported with
inter Russian decodes 100% over land using OP8 mode and more recently
, OP32 is being used , adding another -6 dB to the minimum decode
level , Op8 -32 dB (-38wspr) OP32 -38 dB (-44 wspr)

But if the PC simply keys the PTT then how does the program know on which
frequency i choose on the TX? So i could run any mode on any band, right?
What distances have been achieved with OP8 so far?
It is possible to simply run 2 Op sessions , one set to say OP8
and the other OP32 , or for other bands , one set to beacon , the
other qso mode.
OK, understood. Well, 30% CPU load is very much for my PC since many SL
instances are running there permanently. But for some alternative
experiments, some time... I must admit the ease of simply steering the PTT
sounds good...
CPU loading , from recent posts > Single core 1.7 gig laptop with 2 gig
ram and winxp
(fujitsu siemens lifebook s series) is reported by dg9bfc as
running ok, I find my old P4 3.2 ghz pc shows 25/35% cpu loading
.. Eddie reports his 1.6GHz Atom Processor Sammy Netbook, is running
Op no problems
