PS: So let's assume you can do QSOs down to -9 dB in 2500 Hz, reasonable comfortable (i mean real QSOs, with some content except "5nn JN49 tu", i.e. not just a test. Or an always repeating NDB call in slow CW). Then you see that WSPR decodes about 20 dB lower. Good for DX experiments and propagation studies and for radiating some RF when beeing outside the shack...

Hello Fausto,

Good quastion! I've made a quick test and reduced my TX power so i can receive me in my garden at -6 dB SNR. I then switched to CW and recorde a wav file. So the background noise is real (not coming from a signal generator), but it's daytime noise...

The first half is at -6 dB, the second at -16 dB (in 2500 Hz).
So, the first part is how John/W1TAG would have heared me last night :-) It is no problem for a CW QSO. The seconds part is barely audible but very hard to understand. You could say "i hear you but i cannot read you"...

But the thing is that such good propagation is VERY (!!) rare! The chance is very small that you can make a sked and get such a good propagation just during the time you want to make a QSO. December or January is the best time for attempts i think. But you will need a good antenna and loads of power :-)

Hi Stefan,

a wspr -6dB sgnal is audible ?
The question is this: with this condition and if necessary a bit more power it is possible a cw qso?

Hi all,

Last night there were excellent condx on 630m on the TA path! G8HUH, F5WK and DK7FC managed to be decoded in above 5000 km in WSPR.

I've got exceptional good SNR reports!:

-6 dB by W1TAG/1 means that many weaker stations could have made the path as well, in that time slot!
