I'll keep it brief since we are getting further off-topic.
I have two thoughts on the end of the BBC World Service on Shortwave:
1) The reliance on the Internet for program distribution is worrisome.
One only need look at Egypt where the Internet is shut down, or China
where it is censored.
2) The BBC World Service gives the U.K. considerable stature in the
World, in other words the U.K. is a small country with a big voice and
international role. Elimination of the World Service will make the
U.K. just another small, non-descript country in the EU.

funded by direct taxation which is probable more equitable than the new
plan
which is to fund it out of the compulsory so called Licence Fee, collected
under threat of imprisonment, which is really a tax on a tax i.e. paid out
of taxed income.
This is the dark side of English culture.
