The newspapers are full of comments every day about how badly  A level students are performing, how the pass mark has dropped and how education has declined over the years, and amateur radio exams are no different. How can multiple choice papers, with all the answers written down, where the candidate just ticks a box be more difficult than sitting down with a blank piece of paper, pencil and an exam question paper.
It stands to reason even if you know little or nothing about a subject and tick a few boxes you could be lucky, but there is no element of luck with a blank piece of paper, you must know your subject.
These observations are not mine alone, the daily press if full of adverse comments about those in society than cannot read nor write nor count, and it is a big percentage in excess of 20%.
Address your remarks to higher authority if you have a complaint and argue your own corner, you do not know what opinions others have insulted or otherwise. You have deviated away from the Subject, let us have your opinion on rusty razors and high impedence ear pieces, and how to construct such devices, you have passed a real radio amateur exam, so this should be old hat for you.
Higher authority would be Newspaper Editors, Education Minister and director of examination boards and the marking agency.

Mal,

Bearing in mind that I was born in 1943 and did the RAE when it required FULL WRITTEN answers AND hand drawn circuits with worked calculations I consider your remark suggesting an ability only to be able to cope with multiple choice exam papers to be an impertinence.

It is probable that others may feel equally ill-disposed and consider your remarks to be the inflammatory cause of some of the trading of insults.

Seems my wish for a more adult and mannered 2009 did not last long!

Stewart
This is a simple exercise and NO ONE knows how to do it, plenty of comments and deviations.
An analogy

1. Some HI TECH RAF pilots asked to fly a WW2 SPITFIRE and found it difficult and performed badly, needed training and tuition.

2. Hi Performance students A + in their subjects could not pass a 1960 GCE paper in maths and english.

These were recent UK TV productions.

RF engineers and improvisers are scarce it would appear both old and new. Digital and DC are abundant.

Take away the Internet source, Maplins and Farnell and the electronics world would collapse.
