No this is not necessary. The major gap is the distance from pole to pole via 
the air.

b) completely isolated from each other

No, rods may touch each other

c) if glued together is there a specific "glue" that should be used
Just fill the rods in an stable tube of plastic material (fiber glass 
reinforced tube or PVC tube.

Aboot the relative permeability of an gapped mag circuit have a look to the 
amidon catalog (Amidon.de or just try ast Fair Rite, the manufacturer of amidon 
ferrites. Moreabout soft ferrites and mag. materials upon request.

I have a pile of ferrite rods that I have rescued from radios over the
years.

I have been thinking about trying to make them into one larger antenna rod
for receiving only.

Would I get any advantage over a normal short single rod, or do the
advantages from one aspect get cancelled out by other aspects. I'm sure
this must have been tried out before any advice would be appreciated.
