Peter,
If you can get hold of it (I'm not sure how you do this) you will find some
material on this topic in the doctoral thesis of David Gibson of Leeds
University. Chapter 4 deals with antenna design and section 4.4 specifically
deals with magnetic-cored antennas.

Many thanks to all the useful information on a Ferrite rod antenna that
has
been received via the list and by direct e-mail.
It is interesting to note that I sent the same original e-mail to another
e-mail list from which I have had no replies. You are to be congratulated
on your willingness to support others on this list. When ever I am talking
to people [in the day job] about communities of practice in education I use
this list as an example of the value of e-mail groups.
My conclusion to the antenna is to experiment with a number of development
steps with ferrites while recognising that effort put into an airspaced
loop would yield better results. However the reduced complexity and easier
control of direction of ferrite makes it an interesting alternative. If I
have time in the summer I am considering digging up parts of the patio and
lawn to get some coax and some other cables to the bottom of the garden.
Then see if I can get planning permission ( local from "Her in doors" )then
I think a decent sized multi turn loop would be the next stage.
