This weekend I was in Arkansas around 180 miles from  East of XDW and
definite "fast" fades, periods  were seen of around 30 secs
(presumably between the ground and sky waves) this was around 9pm CST
- Ive not seen this before and probably another manifestation of the
recovery phase after the storm? This distance seems too close?

Several years ago, when a handful of UK stations were using loop antennas, I noted that their signals exhibited fading at shorter ranges than those using Marconis. At the time, I put it down to the loop producing more RF at a higher angle, but have no evidence to back that up.
