Hi Mike,

I have often noticed that I can read a signal better on the tiny
speaker in the lid of my IC-706 Mk1 than I can when I put on
headphones. In fact I use phones only to exclude external noise,
not to improve readability.

This is especially true during HF contests when the oprator gets tired
at the end of the competition (you know, when those headphones start to
irritate your ears...).

It's sometimes easier to put the phones down on the table, wide open,
and to listen with the ambient noise around.
