Hi Mal,

I would very much like to try a JT9 MF QSO with you. I am not yet set up for QRSS, but am working toward that capability. We use JT9 in North America and I have worked VE7SL at 4050 Km when I had 4 dB less EIRP than I have now. We will have no trouble at all if we can catch some luck with the QSB. How do you suggest we proceed? I am usually logged into ON4KST chat but I don't recall having seen you there.

On MF my EIRP is 5W and the transmitting antenna is a Marconi T, 90 feet vertical with three 100 foot top hat wires.

It is very disappointing to see such low activity on LF. I am personally more fascinated by LF than MF but there is so little activity down there it is discouraging. Nevertheless I will be back to LF as soon as I repair some problems with the loading coil.

For now I am once again QRF on MF, running a WSPR beacon and looking for JT9 QSOs...

Hi Paul

The best time for a QSO with the UK is around 2300- 0100 utc

Over the years I have had quite a number of QSO’S around this time at this time of year.

The best mode is QRSS for both 474 Khz and 137 Khz and CW is also possible also I am sure JT9 and and FT8 would work but I have not tried these modes across to the USA

NC1K used to hear me frequently on CW on LF,  also stn MM0ALM was heard often on the East coast USA.

There were over 30 countries active on LF about 15 years ago but now it has almost fizzled out and I do not bother any more although I use MF a lot and as you know you report my signal almost nightly on WSPR

If you would like to try a QRSS or JT9 QSO on MF let me know.

My power is 5W erp and antenna is an INV L up 100 ft vertical and the rest horizontal out in the clear in a field.

Last night I got reports on 474.2 from N1BUG, KA1R, VE1YY.

My best DX on MF/630M was Reunion Island last year, almost 10,000 Km

And I do not think he is active this year.

Just think how many trans-Atlantic QSOs could be made. Some, like

myself are very interested but the primary problem is no one awake

on the east side of the pond at the right times!

I have seen signals strong enough for normal CW only a few times.

JT9 would be easy and requires only about 3 dB more signal to decode

than WSPR2. I am looking for information on QSO operating procedures

for QRSS. I have only seen it used for beaconing.

I've been off MF for a while as I put up a temporary HF antenna to

work the Bouvet DXpedition and it severely messed up tuning of the

MF antenna. Now that the Bouvet trip has been aborted I will be

taking that antenna down and returning to MF as soon as I get a

reasonable weather window. I will likely be on MF for a week or so

before moving to LF.
