Hi Chris,

to avoid issues with the mast you can either

- Feed the antenna at the top of the tower via an isolating tranformer.

The big disadvantage is that you will have to position the loading coil also at the top of the tower.

- Feed the antenna at ground level using a second wire to cancel out the effect of the tower.

Have a look here: http://www.strobbe.eu/on7yd/136ant/#Tower.

I'd suggest two to three meters.

Having improved the grounding here I now want to get at least the
lowest corner of my big horizontal roughly square wire loop up higher
than the apex of my bungalow it's currently tied to. The highest
nearest structure is my 40 foot wind up lattice work steel mast. It
would be most convenient to have the vertical element at this corner.
How far away from the steel mast should the vertical element be to not
have issues please? I strap the window line feeder at the base to form
the vertical so I can also use the horizontal loop on HF bands. Thanks
