I 've just been looking at the WOLF-GUI software, and see its more up to date than I seem to recall.   Once you delve deeper into its setup, it provides all the facilities needed for a modern PC system.

In the I/O config your soundcard of choice for in and out can be separately configured - a facility still lacking is some latter day amateur progs in spite of many of us running multiple sound interfaces.

But also significantly, the sample rate and audio appear to be freely selectable.  So I can set 12000Hz sampling, and a 1500Hz tone.  The latter tone frequency is the same as that used for WSPR, meaning the existing I/Q network in the upconverter can be used.

However, it would be nice to see direct digital output, such as RTS and/or DTR line wobbling as is done in EBNaut

What about trying to use the good old M0KGK SDR program in between as an I/Q generator from the audio source.
(This is my setup : softrock rxtx6.2 + M0KGK 1.1.0.64, works ufb at my side since 2012)

It is a bit dated isn't it.    Based on 11025 sampling rate, that'll
give the old early WSJT soundcard calibration issues all over again.
And only appears to give soundcard output.  I do have an upconverter,
but that needs I/Q drive and doubt the software generates that, so a
phasing network needed.  Direct digital drive to to be able to control
my Gaussian ramped PSK source would have been better.

Will take another look anyway - but I can see why its not used much here
now...

    What happened to WOLF  (*) ?

    I've just tried Googling (**) it and find practically no hits.  The
    data mode seems to have been used successfully  in the years around
    2001 and on, for a bit, but has faded.   The URL I had for it is now
    gives the magic 404.  Didn't the first transatlantic contact on
    137kHz use this mode?

    I guess that as it used 10 baud  BPSK,  was considered too
    complicated for the average LF Op. to generate.   No one seems to
    use upconversion from audio, and few seem to be able to make simple
    PSK encoders.   Even for EBnaut, relays  are suggested as the means
    to reverse the phase (yes, truely !!).    I suppose, to be fair, 10
    baud unfiltered BPSK from a high power transmitter is a bit unkind
    to other band users.
