Hello Horst,
what do you mean exactly with "a very high noise level"? Could you suggest to me (= dumb experimenter :-)) a good-enough measurement method, though
simple in terms of required instruments, etc., just to get some figures to discuss on? As for the AATIS design, do you have the schematics available?

The problem: There is a special transformer from Radio Shack that makes the high L. But which type exactly? So I took four standard coils in series to make the high L. The BBB-4 was working, but with a very high noise level, even with low noise transistors. Before I could fix the problem I got a PCB (AS 069) from the AATIS (a german club that is highly engaged bringing ham radio and electronics to schools). I build that "Sferics RX" and its still in use and doing a great job. The PCB is still in stock at http://www.aatis.de/content/baus%C3%A4tze/lieferbar/men%C3%BCseite. I am not member of AATIS. But to me the AS 069 is the better choice than the BBB-4. Horst DO1KHS/DI2AN
