Mark & All,

I recently watched a rigger install a digital TV aerial on next door's gable end.

He drilled the lower wall, fitted a large ring & fixed webbing straps to the bottom of the ladder from the ring. He then attached a fall arrest to the ladder, the ladder had wide leg supports at the bottom. He then put a harness on himself, climbed the ladder, attached his fall arrest clamp & his harness to the top of the ladder & then proceeded to install the aerial.

Installing the aerial took less time than fitting he safety devices. When he had finished I asked him about the safety devices, he said that all the riggers at that firm had to do special training & to enable them to trust the devices they had to fall off the ladder & let the devices protect them from the fall.

And that was just a TV aerial 20 feet up a gable end.

BTW, he also stated that if the wall was rendered they could not do the job as they could not be sure about drilling into a brick correctly.

I was not able to view the video that Graham posted as it had been pulled on copyright grounds.

'Free climbing' has been against the law in for climbing masts and towers etc for years in the UK
Climbers are required to be attached at all times, and fall arrest devices with shock adsorbers are commonly used
Hooking on to a step that is not a closed loop is not going to keep you safe if you slip either.
Climbers are trained regulary to ensure that rescue techniques are practiced and that no bad habits are picked up.
My climbing kit has 2 fall arrest clips and a work position lanyard..
Yes, climbing with double lanyards slows you up, so fall arrest 'travellers' are used with fixed anchor systesm  on the mast allowing to to climb the ladder freely whilst still attached.
These fixed fall arrest systems are found on most masts that I climb

What the guy in the video did was not brave or clever. Just dumb.
