I find some of the online translation facilities good for getting the meaning 
of a word but, even when you only need the sense of a passage, you will do much 
better if you have some understanding of the sentence structure (even for 
languages such as English and German which are not too far apart).

I have a high regard for those who express themselves at length and in 
technical matters in a language which is not their mother tongue.
