Markus and me have used 0,4mm diameter enamelled copper wire. I got those 2km 
wire from a company that produces special transformers. Those 2km wire cost 
about 40 Euro. The water barrel i am using costs about 14 Euro, so all in all 
nothing compared to the usual equipment of the appliance operators on HF (e.g. 
auto tuner).

What would be a good affordable wire to wind a base loading coil from?
It can't be too small diameter or the losses will be huge. That is the
only part of the station that seems like a big undertaking. The rest of
the components are low cost and easy to build.
