I think connector's that are gold plated are done that way because the general public looks at a gold plated item as high quality. If it was tarnished silver plated, then it wouldn't look so pretty. We all know silver is a darn good conductor for RF so we use it when we can. The audio-phools use their fancy looking gold plating 'cause it looks pretty...hi hi...We aren't phools so we use silver 'cause it's lower cost and is a better RF conductor.
