I suspect this was the problem ICOM had with the early 706's which used DTCXO's and were really poor but the later 706 Mk 2's substituted a traditional TCXO and were much better.

yes indeed, some measurements we made a few years ago did indicate that the phase noise can be fairly high.
It all depends, of course on whatever application you are contemplating.
