There is no doubt in my mind that the burning materials would cause some kind of electro-static charge in the atmosphere. I am sure it ionized the atmosphere to the extent that refraction took place

I would just reformat the drive and start from scratch. You might want to low level format the drive before doing the regular format as I have found some drives still messed up without low level form
