Hi Chris, Mike,

... but it's a different kind of fun to have realtime two-way contacts instead of internet feedback.

I would have loved to answer your CQ today. I like those faster QRSS / DFCW modes, because they are a good compromize between sensitivity and speed, match my limited aural-CW abilities, and allow me to take a nip on the coffee cup rather than hectically trying to write code on the pad. Unfortunately due to the light way my antenna is built, I do not dare to raise it in windy times or transmit during heavy rain.

Hello Mike,

Good to hear from you and thanks for the report.

You're quite right and QRM is a real killer especially on the lower frequency bands.
This Christmas break I was plagued with QRM even up to 20m from neighbour's festive lighting.

I'll be retiring from work soon so will have to get QRV on LF digi modes as that seems the way to go.

Chris.

You are 599 here of course.

As for activity, I think CW is much harder now because the noise
floor in Europe from DCF and HGA is much greater than ten years ago.
Plus local TVs, wall-warts etc, create much QRM to 'wideband' modes
like CW. I used to work DL quite easily using much less power than I
run now, but have recently failed to be heard by several DLs calling
CQ.

However there is still a lot of activity on narrower modes. One of my
transmissions on Opera32 last night resulted in 10 reports, 5 of
which were greater than 1000km away and a couple more than 2000km
away. A few nights ago I received Op32 reports from 18 stations in 9
countries, including Russia. Just think how long it would have taken
to work them all on QRSS3 or 10.

Thanks again Joe and Markus for the great screen shots.

I'm trying 137.635 kHz now to clear that QRM.
I'm just looking at my old LF logbook of ten years ago - January 2005
(in date order) There was a lot of activity then, both on CW and QRSS:
OH5UFO  PA0BWL  F6CWA  OK2BVG  DF0WD  M0FMT  YU7AR  G3XDV
M0BMU F6BWO  HA6PC  DL2HRE  Z38AV  G3YXM  SM6BHZ  DF6NM
G3AQC  S57A  HF7VPM  IK5ZPV  G3OLB  DK1IS  G3WCB  G3LDO  F6CHT
Happy days. 73Chris G3XIZ
