For mechanical and HV reasons i would prefer the normal configuration. I depend on the place you have. If you have a shed near the antenna feed point, i would simple wind 0.4 or 0.5 mm diameter enamel. cu wire on a coil which has 0.6m or better 0.8m diameter. That will always work well :-)

Hi Markus, Warren, Stefan,

Thanks for the encouragement. My quest for thousands of metres of wire
has begun. Stefan's monster coil and Markus' coaxial buckets make me
envious. Would it be a good idea to pie wind the wire? G3NYK did
some work with pies on LF and got more inductance for a given amount of
wire than a solenoid. Perhaps there will be too much shunt capacitance
with 3 or 4 pies.

In the mean time, it may be best to follow up on the loop idea. The far
end of the 100m wire can be grounded to make it a loop. How much series capacitance will be needed and how does one excite it? An xfmr?
