gloomy picture.
Reality often is , I can work to GI/EI
very simply on 477 , being on the edge of
the Irish Sea , where Mal can work
into EU being on the edge of the North Sea
Ive often copied GI stations calling CQ
and posted here , that some was calling ,
but no takers
And weak signal modes need a lot more
equipment over heads to get on to 477/136 [
except one ] but even then the chance
of a 2 way qso is very low ....
upping the Ae power may get dx beacon
decodes , but , very few beacons reply
via radio , one data mode will send a report
via the radio and via email , if left
in 'beacon report mode'
Oddly , though 20 years too late
, 100 baud packet would of been a
good mode for 500 , bit like
vhf with stable day time links , but
with night time extended hops

Mal,
You paint a very gloomy picture. There is less LF
CW but plenty of activity using weaker signal modes. At sunspot maximum it
is also quite natural for people to try HF to take advantage of good conditions.
They will come back, I suspect, in a few years
time. 73s Roger G3XBM
