I agree, it's hard to keep them with us.

But even some adults are doing the same thing. I suspect they need some
motivations.
Not all the people are auto-motivating. Some just give up after a short.

This kid is already going strong with a 20 Mt PIC controlled colpitts
oscillator beacon,
While studying for his license exam in November. Not so bad. Let's see in
the future.

Yes, and with some luck they (not all but many) will solder a christmas 
tree with some green LEDs (e.g. http://www.df0wl.de/projekte.html) 
and/or will buy a 2m/70cm FM hand TRX, will do some packet radio or APRS 
and 2 years later they are gone...
Normally and regularly using the bands without becoming tired to have 
QSOs with some nice content (here called rag-chewing) is rare :-(

But there are exceptions :-)
