Yep, been R/O for 15yrs.
About the PY/EU QSO to make things worse :-)
In the 80's PCH (Scheveningenradio) had limited MF TOR-channels, as an
experiment they opened a duplex 425/512kHz TOR channel.
At that time I was working on a "offshore construction vessel" in Campos
bay. One evening 500kHz was again filled with EU noise.
As an experiment I started up the STB75 (TOR system) had a beautiful
link no phasing errors. Cleared a lot of traffic on that channel.
Mostly these condition repeats itself a couple consecutive days and last
several hours.
TX power about 800W into a DUK, which is a fattened vertical 16m. Sea is
very favourable for MF.
As I explained the QRN in some areas is extremely high.
This is also one of the reasons PY doesn't carry Navtex on MF, but on 4MHz.
BTW monitoring Navtex is good to see if there is any condition on MF.
I can recommend YAND for this purpose which stores all reception data
has filters and graphics to see how conditions are
And yes it can also receive Navtex messages.

One ever wondered that QSO's could take place before the discovery of
shortwave.
Just an impression how Dutch tried to by-pass the Marconi monopoly, the
2400kW VLF sparktransmitter which was constructed in the colony Indonesia.

After finishing this project , some "hamradio" made a QSO with only a
few Watts on shortwave.
The project was a complete waste of money.

Also thanks for the IARU link. What i find interesting is the comment
from TF2JB. I wonder if TF3HZ knows him? Maybe a good adress to ask
for common projects with Iceland below 1 MHz.
