I just received the disturbing information that Bill Ashlock passed
away on March 10 from a sudden heart attack.
Bill did not hold an amateur license but he was an inveterate
experimenter on the unlicensed "Lowfer" band (160-190 kHz) and also
500 kHz as WE2XGR/5 .
Bill was an electrical engineer (retired) and most widely known for
his well documented and methodical antenna experiments, particularly
transmitting loops.
Bill had been retired for some time now and had been building a cabin
in the mountains of Northern New Hampshire from scratch mostly be his
own labor.
Bill was physically very active and hiked quite a bit in the rugged
terrain around his home.

Recently Bill had built a vertical antenna with an elevated
counterpoise on the mountain in NH (good electrical ground being hard
to obtain on the mountain) and had been using it on 185kHz with plans
to test it 500kHz this Spring.

Bill was a good friend (though I hadn't met his wife or daughter) and
helped me get on 137kHz with my transmitting loop antenna.

Bill will be missed!

(Forwarded message below from the US LOWFER Reflector)

Hi Mike -

I hope this e-mail finds you well.

We've never met, but I'm the daughter of Bill Ashlock (WM); I've been
living in Seattle for the last 11 years.

I understand that you communicated with and met my dad while enjoying your
shared lowfer hobby.

I'm very sorry to say that my father died suddenly over the weekend of a
heart attack. My mom specifically requested that I track you down and let
you know.  (So I hope I've got the right e-mail address;
http://www.lwca.org/sitepage/part15/callmain.htm lists you as being @
email.com, but as I'd not heard of that domain, I thought I'd try gmail as
well.)

Lowfer antennas were one of my dad's favorite hobbies both before and after
he retired almost a decade ago. Thanks for being one of the reasons that
he enjoyed it so much.

If you have the time, can you please let anyone else in the lowfer
community who knew him know that he has passed away? I'd very much
appreciate it.

-Susan

p.s. As far as I know, "WM" should still be transmitting. :)
