Nope.

1N4001, 1N4007 or any similar plastic 1A diode would do the job. Or you
could leave it out if you were confident that you wouldn't connect up the
power supply the wrong way round :-)

I see from the RSGB Handbook that there is a Schottky diode in series with
the +12 line.  Does it have to be a Schottky device?
