from my experience you need a lot more "power" outside. Even a bit of wind will 
cool down the tip of a 30 or 40W iron so that it will not even melt the solder.

My apologies for the off topic enquiry.
I'm considering buying a butane powered soldering iron for use on antennas
 in the garden and fields.
I'd be grateful for any recommendations or other comments, re soldering away
from mains power, that you may have?
