Great story!

There are hundreds of mini-whips in use and so far I have had very few if any reports on a failing J310. What happens is that the induced voltage is small due to the small pick up area.
What also helps is that the J310 is a sturdy device.

When the voltage gets too high, the J310 starts conducting and it can be calculated that the dissipated power in the device won't harm it.

The only reports of failure are when people are accidentally feeding 100W RF up the feed line! Even then only one resistor and the 2N5109 output transistor need to be replaced.
In all cases the J310 is not harmed at all!
