SMT has been around for more than a quarter of a century .  
Mustn't discriminate, it must qualify as ancient too :-)
 
I worked on,  I think, the first satellite to use SMT construction in space hardware - ERS1. 
The RF subsystem manufactured by Alcatel / Thomson - and we certainly had a lot of discussion about reliability and PCB manufacturing techniques those days.
