Hi Graham,
OK, but most people are just transmitting beacon signals! I would not
even have the time to do a real QSO in QRSS-60 but this is not the
issue. We are talking about beacon transmissions like WD2XGJ or OE5ODL
does it each night. RA3YO is transmitting "Y" in DFCW 60. So, if you
receive 10x "Y" you could receive 1x "Y" in one night with 10 dB
better S/N. But the thing is, that this 10 dB S/N can make the
difference between receiving a weak trace (positive reception) and
receiving nothing at all! Transmitting "Y" in DFCW-600 takes about 44
minutes which is no problem! People can think about that and may choose
their personal wanted QRSS/DFCW mode :-)
Ask Jim/M0BMU about his reception of my signal on VLF. He keeps the 2nd
best RX distance at all on VLF! Ask what he would have received if
choosing QRSS-60 (about 45 mHz FFT). He has taken the time to drive out
of the noise and got a doubtless positive reception. If i would have
transmitted QRSS-60, it would have been "lost" time and energy, for him
and for me!

Assuming this is right .. qrss 600
will have a dit length of 600 seconds = 10 minuets and at 3:1
dit/dash dash = 30 minuets , it would take over 1 hour to invite
the other side to TX ...the sun would be shining by then and game
over !
