David,

>I'd be interested in knowing as I am trying to do some pro-bono work for the ARRL on getting use of 137 kHz here in the USA.

I am running 4Watts ERP (measured, using field strength)  on 137 kHz and this seems to be the minimum needed for someone on the East Coast to be copied in Europe on a fairly reliable basis using very slow QRSS speeds. I am licensed for 10W ERP and will try to get closer to that power level this Fall.   If you want to work across the pond from further inland or use faster cw than MORE power will be needed.

I am very very worried that the ARRL will settle for 1 Watt ERP (or worse 1 W EIRP).!
This would be a BIG MISTAKE!
About 10 years ago the ARRL was turned down for a 137 kHz ham band on the basis that it would interfere with power line carrier systems and take down the grid. Now 8 years after 9/11 it would be ironic if the grid was still susceptible to interference from hams!
I live 900 feet from a high power transmission line which has Power Line Carrier signals on it and I haven't caused any interference in 5 years operation at the 4W ERP level.

Bottom line  - get AT LEAST 10W ERP for hams - there is NO REASON TO SETTLE FOR LESS!

Hi Jay,
I will be sending a beacon signal QRSS3 on 501.1kHz until 2330z.
I have modified my old PL519 TV sweep tube transmitter which ran about
60 to 70W. It now has two PL519s in parallel running 120W.
I have taken down the HF quad until the sunspots wake up a bit and
reinstalled the antenna used for 73/136kHz so I am now running close to
the new ERP limit.
