But have you thought about the power DENSITY.   Its a well known fact
that spreading a signal in frequency improves channel usage and
assists weak signalling - go back to Shannon's eqn.

Look at first GSM (which used frequency hopping to improve usage) then
3G with DSSS.   Also all the WLAN modes use frequency spreading.

Methinks you're behind the times thinking single carrier modulation.
Amateurs should move with teh times, not be stuck in the 1960's
