There is a commercial design that uses a helical wound whip element.
The main purpose is to decrease the length of the whip, so you have the
same performance with a smaller overall length. I have not tested this
myself, but it might be possible that the added inductance does improve
performance above about 10 - 15 MHz.
At lower frequencies the antenna element works more like a capacitance
than as a traditional antenna with voltage and current distrubution.
The best way to find out is to try it! Though with current conditions it
will be a bit difficult to evaluate propagation above 20 MHz.
