Indeed .. maybe the longer path suffers more from slow phase shifts, 
which affects PSK08 more than PSK31. Did you have the AFC on or off ? 
(in the presence of QRM/QRN, it is often better to turn the AFC off; 
which is what I was using).
Without the AGC, the tuning indicator (vector scope) showed only 
vertical lines as it should - in BPSK .
