firm and wire it myself (it will take some patience...)

Nigel,
thanks to you too. Indeed the connector is identical to a GPIB connector, but with a subtle difference. The GPIB
connector has two small bolts on the sides, allowing two connectors to be stacked and bolted together.
This connector instead has two "ears", meant to be latched to the wire
retaining clamps present on the female connector
on the instrument's panel.
Probably a GPIB cable could be used, but without any provision to firmly seat
the connectors in place.
