On reflection I think Loran A was on about 1930.  From what I recall it sounded 
a bit like multiple bandsaws fading in and out with their relative phases 
wobbling around like the efforts of a not very good disco DJ.

I doubt that it could be a Loran line.  The nearest Loran system in
frequency used to be Loran A with a centre frequency just above 1900kHz. It
was the bane of Topband DXers but was shut down years ago.
