I have just completed a stand alone Beacon/QSO controller that uses any RS-232
terminal for control. It will presently allow full CW and QRSS signally much
like QRS does however, no need to tie up a computer to do it... Set the
message(s), mode(s) and speed(s) and let her rip as you can disconnect it from
the computer at that point. If you want to QSO just put it in QSO mode and
away you go from the terminal... It also has the capability of controlling an
AD9850 and other Analog Devices DDSs and is directly compatiable with the
NJQRP daughterboard. CW speeds 5-40WPM and QRSS 1-120 second dot... I'll be
adding JASON and DFCW to it shortly as well as 'test' modes such as a sweep
generator and sine/trinagle waves...
The design is robust and will recover from power bumps on its own...

the manual.
The code runs on a PIC 18F458 which has lots of memory and allows for a nice
text based user interface. I'm presently putting together a simple kit of the
basic parts so I can help you out there as well. The project requires only
three ICs including the DDS... And should only take an hour or so to assembly
and test(no hardware calibration required...) its all in the software...

In order to beat the high QRM and QRN levels on the 136kHz ham band very
slow CW is used (speeds going from 0.4 WPM even down to 0.01 WPM). QRS
allows you to key your TX at these extreme slow speeds using the serial or
parallel port of your PC.
Version 3.17 is Win3 compatible but will not support the parallel port under
WinNT, Win2000, WinXP etc.
Version 4.02 has full support of the parallel port but requires at least
Win98.
