The problem with using a soundcard output to a mic input is not in the programming aspect, but is a question of efficiency and possibly power dissipation. Guys who key Class C, D, and E amplifiers have enough trouble with the duty cycle of QRSS sometimes. Imagine what a linear amp for SSB might do at full carrier continuously for a minute. It's really, really much easier to optoisolate an I/O port and use old fashioned on-off keying in most cases.
