I'd treat it like any vertical. Radials are required for proper operation. You won't get in any quarterwave radials so they are short and will require the ground pipe at the end to kind of make them

I think connector's that are gold plated are done that way because the general public looks at a gold plated item as high quality. If it was tarnished silver plated, then it wouldn't look so pretty.
