It's worth a try to normalise the signal.

I'll have a look at that at the weekend.  It will probably
have to be a two-pass script.

There are several ways to do this.  For example using
vtwrite to split the signal file into chunks (eg -G 300),
then loop over the chunks running vtfilter | vtstat to measure
the level of each chunk in the band 8270 +/- 1500, then
vtmix -c to apply the scaling factor.

Actually, I've just thought of a one-pass solution which
doesn't use vtwrite. I won't have time to try it until
tomorrow evening.
