You don't need anything like 3 years, perhaps only a few seconds.

It all depends on having enough S/N ratio, and knowing in advance
that you're dealing with a monochromatic sinusoid.

Now if you wanted to separate two signals 10^-8 Hz apart,
then you would need a few years.
