Try VLF!  No tinkering with delicate "Receivers" and tickly "Transmitters", on absurdly high frequencies you can't even hear. Connect your lightest PC to any ol' GPS device from the junkbox, grab your family's disposed Stereo from the attic, wind a couple of thousand turns around a dustbin, and off you go!
