As far as i know, most stations arround EU are using omnidirectional antennas. Maybe 10% are using loops or cardioid antennas? I know F6CNI and F1AFJ are using cardioid antennas.
On my RX location in the city i'm using a small active omnidirectional E field antenna. On my remote RX site i'm preferring a loop beaming NW/SE. In some time i will have finished my stereo receiver for MF. The i can decide to use a T-antenna or a loop or a combination out of these two antennas resulting in a cardioid system. The advantage over e.g. a K9AY design is that i can use the configurations simultaneously, i.e. i can build (in SpecLab) a cardioid antenna beaming to NW AND a cardioid antenna beaming to SW AND an omnidirectional antenna, receiving to the same time :-)
