This is not proposed as a solution but maybe as a further avenue to
explore for experimentation, It is possible to obtain (ebay,
fleamarkets etc.) sometimes at very low cost "Thin clients". I have
one by WYSE that runs WinCE. This has Ethernet port and USB
connectors also Audio I/O (usual PC jacks) and monitor (VGA).. I
have no idea of the capabilities or specs of these interfaces but
there might be some room for experiment. The unit I have runs from
5Volts via a small separate PSU. Physically the units are usually
quite small.

a few 10 mW. I also saw cheap high gain WLAN directional antennas
at
amazon...
