Thanks for all the replies....both serious & humourous :-))
 
The idea of Alan's (G4JNT) re: the use of monofilament fishing line is a good one. I remember on a previous & similar top load I supported the radial arms with fishing line & I noticed the difficulty it caused the birds trying to perch.
 
The strange thing is that since posting the Slightly OT message the Starlings have been a lot less in their numbers, instead of the 20 to 30 or so there have been only a few. See photo here :-
 
 
But I will install some fishing line to deter the birds in future.
